Minecraft players have developed a language of their own: some words come from the game itself, others were invented by fans. If your child talks about spawning, mobs and redstone and you can't follow a word, this dictionary will help. It's just as useful for beginners.

Knowing a word means knowing what to ask. This dictionary opens the door to a conversation about the game.

— From the editors

How this dictionary works: each word is explained briefly and without jargon, and the words are grouped into three topics. Small details sometimes differ between editions and versions of the game.

The world and its inhabitants

Mob
Any living creature in the game: animals, villagers, monsters. The word comes from a shortening of "mobile", as in a moving object.
Hostile mob
A creature that attacks the player, such as a zombie, skeleton or Creeper. Most of these mobs spawn in the dark.
Biome
A natural zone of the world with its own climate, plants and creatures: forest, desert, tundra, jungle, ocean.
Spawn
When a character or mob appears in the world. The spawn point is the place where your character respawns after dying.
Villager
A peaceful village inhabitant. Villagers have professions, and you can trade with them.
Pillager
A hostile mob that lives in outposts and takes part in patrols and raids. Pillagers are the main attackers in a raid.

Actions and mechanics

Crafting
Making items from materials following recipes. Simple things are crafted in your inventory, everything else on a crafting table.
Crafting table
A block used to make tools, weapons and most items. It's usually one of the first things you build.
Redstone
Red dust and the related blocks that carry a signal. The basis of all machines, from a door with a button to complex contraptions.
Farm
A build where you grow crops or raise animals. It saves you from constantly searching for food.
Raid
An attack on a village by Pillagers that comes in waves. It starts when a character with the Bad Omen effect enters a village.
Hero of the Village
An effect a player gets for fighting off a raid. Villagers thank their defender with better trades.

Playing and add-ons

Resource pack
A set of files that changes the game's textures and sometimes its sounds. The world and rules stay the same; only the look changes.
Shader
An add-on that changes the lighting: shadows, reflections, glow. It puts a noticeable load on your device.
Server
A world that runs on a separate computer and that many players can join at the same time. Every server has its own rules.
Marketplace
The in-game store where skins, resource packs, worlds and add-ons are officially sold.
Skin
Your character's appearance. You can change it in the settings or pick one in the Marketplace.
World seed
The code the game uses to generate a world. The same seed in the same edition and version produces a similar landscape.
